Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

At Edison International Academy, Dahl Al Hamam, we recognise that the early years are the most critical stage of a child’s development

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

Preschool & Reception

Our Preschool and Reception classes follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework from England, providing children with a strong, secure start to their learning journey.

During these early years, children develop the foundations for learning, behaviour, wellbeing, and relationships. We place great importance on creating a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment where every child feels valued, confident, and ready to learn.

Why EYFS Is So Important

Early childhood experiences have a lasting impact on a child’s future learning and development. A positive and supportive early start helps children to:

  • Develop confidence and independence
  • Build strong social and emotional skills
  • Develop language, communication, and early learning skills
  • Form positive attitudes towards school and learning

We understand that every child develops at their own pace, and our approach is carefully tailored to meet individual needs while encouraging curiosity, resilience, and self-belief.

How Children Learn in EYFS?

The Three Characteristics of Effective Learning

Children in EYFS learn through:

  • Playing and Exploring – being curious, investigating, and having the confidence to try new experiences
  • Active Learning – staying focused, showing persistence, and taking pride in achievements
  • Creating and Thinking Critically – developing ideas, solving problems, and finding new ways to approach tasks

Our Preschool and Reception classrooms provide daily opportunities for children to experience and develop all three characteristics through meaningful, engaging activities.

EYFS Areas of Learning

The EYFS curriculum is organised into seven areas of learning, which work together to support holistic development.

Prime Areas

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development

Specific Areas

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Learning Through Purposeful Play

Learning in EYFS is built around purposeful play, combining child-initiated and adult-guided experiences. Through play, children are supported to:

  • Build confidence and independence
  • Develop communication and social skills
  • Explore, investigate, and think creatively
  • Make sense of the world around them

This balanced approach ensures children are well prepared — academically, socially, and emotionally — for a smooth transition into Year 1.
