lower secondary

Our Lower Secondary Department (Keystage 3: Years 7–9) provides students with a crucial bridge between primary education and the academic expectations of the upper secondary years. This stage is carefully designed to strengthen core skills, deepen subject knowledge, and support students’ growing independence as learners and young adults.

A Curriculum Designed for Growth

At Edison International Academy, Aspire, the Lower Secondary follows the National Curriculum for England, offering a broad and balanced range of subjects including English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, ICT, Arabic, Islamic Studies, Art, and Physical Education. This diverse curriculum enables students to explore their interests, identify their strengths, and develop a strong academic foundation before progressing to the IGCSE years.
Through engaging lessons and purposeful learning experiences, students are encouraged to think critically, analyse information, collaborate effectively, and apply their knowledge in real-world contexts.

Building Skills for Future Success

Lower Secondary is a time of rapid academic and personal development. Our teaching approach fosters:
  • Independent thinking
  • Problem-solving and inquiry-based learning
  • Effective communication and presentation skills
  • Creativity and innovation
  • Personal responsibility and organisation
Students regularly take part in discussions, group projects, practical investigations, and research tasks that prepare them for the demands of Key Stage 4 and beyond.

Pastoral Support and Wellbeing

The transition into adolescence brings new challenges, and our dedicated Pastoral Care team works closely with students to ensure they feel supported, confident, and understood. Form Tutors, teachers, and school counsellors collaborate to monitor wellbeing, promote positive behaviour, and help students navigate social and emotional development with resilience and empathy.

Assessment and Academic Tracking

Students’ progress is monitored throughout the year using a combination of formative and summative assessments. This includes classwork, quizzes, projects, practical tasks, and end-of-unit tests. Regular feedback helps each learner understand their strengths and next steps, allowing us to tailor support and stretch where needed.

Preparing for Key Stage 4

By the end of Year 9, students have developed the academic foundations, personal maturity, and study skills needed to make informed choices for their IGCSE subjects. We guide students and parents through this process carefully to ensure each child embarks on a pathway aligned with their interests, strengths, and future aspirations.
